Ambience is a conceptual magazine highlighting eccentric and dreamy music artists. At the focus of this issue is Giraffage, an electronic producer based in the Bay Area who combines electronica and R&B to make fluid, slightly melancholic beats.
To start conveying Giraffage's energy in an artist feature, I started with a moodboard. I drew inspiration from futuristic sci-fi elements, with bright, loud colors to bring out eccentricity, and used gradients and grain to create a softer texture.
In designing the cover and spreads, I didn't want to design in the style of a mainstream magazine, and instead took a more graphic and stylized approach for an independent small-batch magazine distribution.
I specifically wanted to highlight Giraffage's unique livestreams, in which he DJs while doing an assortment of different activities, from exercising to cooking to painting. This compliments the playful theme of the magazine and further highlights Giraffage's eclectic personality.
